BetterTouchTool

Custom trackpad gestures for your Mac

Map any multi-finger gesture on the MacBook trackpad, Magic Trackpad or Magic Mouse to any of 600+ actions — globally or per app.

macOS ships with a fixed set of trackpad gestures — BetterTouchTool lets you define your own. Combine taps, clicks, swipes, tip-taps and force clicks with one to five fingers, and attach them to any action: window snapping, keyboard shortcuts, scripts, app switching and hundreds more.

Gestures can be global or app-specific, so a three-finger swipe can mean one thing in Safari and something entirely different in Xcode. This is the feature BetterTouchTool started with — and after more than a decade of refinement, it's still the most powerful gesture engine available for macOS.

👆

Taps, clicks & swipes

Single- to five-finger taps, clicks and swipes in any direction — including corner clicks and edge swipes.

🤏

Tip taps

Rest one or more fingers on the trackpad and tap with another — fast, ergonomic triggers that don't exist anywhere else.

💪

Force click triggers

Use pressure as an input: force clicks with different finger counts become separate triggers.

✏️

Drawing gestures

Draw a shape — a letter, a heart, anything — and run an action when it's recognized. Learn more.

🎯

Per-app gestures

The same gesture can do different things in different apps — or be limited to just one app.

🖱️

Magic Mouse too

The same gesture engine works on the Magic Mouse surface — taps, swipes and tip-taps included.

A few examples - the possibilities are endless:

  • Three finger click → middle click
  • Three finger swipe up → show clipboard manager
  • Four finger swipe down → quit app
  • Two finger tip tap left / right → previous / next tab
  • Five finger tap → toggle full screen
  • Three finger swipe left / right → switch desktops
  • Draw a “C” → open Calendar (or any app)
  • TipTap near a window edge → snap & resize window

Frequently asked questions

✌️Do custom gestures work alongside the built-in macOS gestures?
Yes — BetterTouchTool only reacts to the gestures you explicitly configure; everything else keeps working normally. If you assign a gesture macOS already uses, you can disable the system version in System Settings to avoid both firing.
✌️Which devices are supported?
The built-in trackpads of all MacBooks, the Apple Magic Trackpad (all generations) and the Apple Magic Mouse.
✌️Can a gesture behave differently per app?
Yes. Triggers can be configured globally, per app, or for groups of apps via Conditional Activation Groups (e.g. one rule for all browsers).
✌️What can a gesture trigger?
Any of BetterTouchTool's 600+ built-in actions — keyboard shortcuts, window management, scripts, app launching, system controls — and sequences that chain several actions together.
